Bought at Nordstrom - if you search their site for this brand, there are several very cute long dresses that would fit the bill.

I wore a dark blue dress to an evening wedding recently. I had on some sparkly earrings and a necklace so it wasn't too drab. I was going to do something interesting with my shoes/purse but I just wound up going with black because that's what I had on hand. It looked nice enough.

The fall wedding I was at last weekend had 90% of women in black dresses.
black dresses.... I guess it saves money, as they can also use the dresses for funerals, but it doesn't seem much fun. They probably all arrived in grey cars.

time of day? How formal?
Presumably you won't be outside (at least not for long, and you'd wear a coat), so the temperature isn't a big deal. But wintery jewel tones would be nice, if they are good colors for you.

Any suggestions? I'm 5'7, 135lbs (size 6), light brown hair and eyes. My style is pretty classic.
The wedding is in Northern New Jersey, so it'll be cold. I haven't had occasion to really dress up in a very long time, so I'm not really clued into what's new/in/out in terms of wedding attire.
