Get private lessons from arlington county... Not published? Take a class and approach a teacher.

Do private lessons. Well worth the extra money. We had a good experience with Liz in Arlington. I hear that Yorktown is warmer than w-l.

It's cold all the time! I hate that part.
If they have an exercise room, go there early to use it. Either sit on the bike, walk or run on the treadmill. 15 minute minimum helps you warm up.

Once you are in the water, you have to keep moving, dip head in and just start moving arms. In 5 minutes, you won't notice the difference.
Or sit in the hot tub before going in the pool. Or the sauna if there's one.

Tried lessons through the county. They were fine. Probably depends on your class size. My had about 10 people, so we got a lot of swim time, but not much 1 on 1 instructor time. W&L pool was always freezing... maybe try another location if your sensitive to water temp.

I never did either. Growing up, I never had formal lessons. My son (5 yrs) WAS (yay!) so fearful of putting his head under water and not knowing how to swim myself, I really couldn't help him past the fear. I found an old post on this forum about private lessons in S. Arl. and am so glad I did. We both can now swim and my son loves the water so much, I honestly think he is part fish!
