If you want to detour into the Raleigh/Chapel Hill area, stay at The Carolina Inn! It's lovely, and a short walk to restaurants near UNC-CH.

We usually stay south of Petersburg. With traffic in the summer on Friday afternoons, its about half way. There really isn't that much in North/South Carolina on 95.

Raleigh is not on the way

You will not really hit Raleigh on that drive, unless you go off 95 which is out of the way. We do this drive every year, except go a little further south to St. Simons Island, GA, and we usually stay in Fayetteville, NC or Florence, SC. Wilson, NC is also about 4 hours from here.

Go South on 85 and exit at Chapel Hill. Great restaurants (Lantern is awesome), great strolling around, and there are some nice hotels.

I'll be driving from DC to Savannah the weekend before Thanksgiving and would like to break the drive up. It looks like the Raleigh-Durham area is about halfway. Can anyone recommend a nice place to stay, preferably in an area where we (me & DH) can stroll around, find a good restaurant, etc?

Thanks!
