I read this today and thought this was some good advice.

This is great advise for runners regardless if you are running the MCM. Sometimes, family emergencies, national disaster, sickness, etc make you have to exit the race before it starts. What to do if the Marine Corps Marathon Gets Cancelled http://ow.ly/pSjje

Nicely said pp. Some people on DCUM criticize everything. The race not only means a lot to the runners and their fans...but also to local businesses...hotels, restaurants, etc.

I think this stinks. I have personally run the MCM 3 times and not running this year. To most nonrunners the cancellation of the race might not seem big in the grand scheme of the shutdown; especially in comparison to those who are furloughed. But, I beg to disagree because running is most people's sanity. Compared to most sports, it is relatively low in cost except for race admissions, and in this uncertain times a lot of non-runners have turned into runners to help reduce their stress. In addition, the non-runners who were furloughed or without jobs realized they had time to run and do something productive. It is most runners sanity. Such a shame.

You're right---there are much bigger stakes than a race and you've reminded me to keep things in perspective. I'm sorry for the stress you're experiencing and hope things improve for you soon.

They are also recently accustomed to supporting last-minute cancelations of other huge marathons bc of NYC last year.

But obviously hoping it doesnt get canceled!

I've run Richmond as well (twice). It's a great race!

I think it will come down to the wire but everything will be fine. They really should wait until Monday if they can because I think the government will be open.

Thanks! I was just telling my Dh and also my friend that I have been training with that if it does get cancelled, I will definitely want to sign up for something else. My Dh is actually a Marine and his ball is being held in Richmond that same day! We could make a whole weekend of it!

I feel so bad for you. It was my first marathon in 2011 and then I ran it again in 2012. Truly one of the biggest and most memorable milestones of my adult life! Will keep my fingers crossed for you.
