Actually, my kids are 5 and 8 and will be staying with well loved grandparents. Old enough for you?

Keep the ideas coming -- I'm excited!

I think travelling should be done as a family.

We took a kids-free fabulous trip to San Fran and Big Sur last October. There are awesome restaurants in Big Sur and you can spend the day hiking.

We're thinking about a 5 day no-kids trip to Iceland next summer - 6.5 hour direct flights from DC.

San Francisco. Great food in the city and you can head out to wine country.

What hype about the food sucking? London has many of the best restaurants in the world at the moment.

Ooh, I would go to Costa Rica!

To the "yuck" poster--My kids are 3 and 5 and we haven't done more than a 1 night overnight (one time it was 2 nights) away from them. They stay with my mom, she's great and I trust her, but my kids (one in particular) aren't very flexible and misses us terribly, so at this time we won't do a 5 day trip. But if my kids were all "woohoo, we are at grandmas, see ya!!" With no sadness, we would go longer. It's good for the kids, good for grandma, good for the parents. No "yuck" about it.

Ehhhhh... I think I speak for many of us when I say, "What now?"
What does OP's kids being five have to do with ANYTHING?
What is so magical about five? What if her kids are a set of mature four year and eleven month old twins?

Charleston, SC - great food there! Stay at the Sanctuary on Kiawah Island. It's gorgeous. If you want to do international, go to Turks and Caicos. It's a pretty easy trip from the DC area. Food is good but not spectacular though.

DH and I are ready to travel without kids for more than a weekend. So where should we go? We want to go somewhere with good food, and something active to do. My (unformed and unresearched) ideas are new orleans or the yucatan. Other ideas?
