I think it would take at least 45 minutes if you live in one of the more popular parts of Alexandria (i.e. not right off the beltway). Falls Church or even some parts of Arlington would be better commute wise, if you want to move to a suburb with a more urban neighborhood feel than the Ashburn suburbs, but still commute to Ashburn.

My boss lives in Old Town and we work in Herndon, off Rte 28. He goes north, through Arlington, and gets on 66 at Glebe. He's been doing it for over 10 yrs so I believe he knows the quickest route. It takes him at least 45 min. If it rains, his commute home is easily 70min or longer.

I did it for about a year and a half, First from Southern Maryland, then the West End of Alexandria. I use to do GW Parkway to Georgetown Pike, to Swinks Mill Road, to Lewinsville Road, and then took 7 west straight up. About 45 min to an hour with moderate traffic. When I moved to Alexandria it was the Express Lanes to the free toll road entrance on 7 and got off at the 28N exit on the toll road. That was about 29 to 35 min. The Metro construction definitely crippled that commute after a while, so I started exclusively taking the Toll Road straight from 495. It gets costly that way though.

I used to,do Rosemont alex to herndon, and averaged an unpleasant 50 mins. I'd look at Falls Church or environs for a way better commute.

Not too bad with ez pass on beltway and toll rd, but it can get expensive.

It would be ok. Take the ezpass lanes at Braddock road, and take it to the Dulles Toll road. Should take 30 mins as some have said

Bad idea. Alexandria to 267 itself is a good 35 mins at non-peak times.

Ridiculously long and unpleasant, and not really a backwards commute with all the jobs in Tysons and the Dulles area.

Why not move out to Ashburn? I live in Arlington, and it costs me about $20 in gas and tolls and 35 minutes to Ashburn.
