I will usually rinse stuff, but am less concerned if it's something that's going to be cooked thoroughly. I'm not crazy about bugs, but a little digested dirt is inevitable in life, and totally harmless.

That's not true. Its extremely non-porous. You could soak the thing in water and still get it to brown.

Yes. And the last time I bought cauliflower, I found a tiny live slug on it. I'm glad I didn't roast and eat the slug!
