Wait, there are communities that have both carports and HOAs? Really?

My neighbor embarrasses everyone with car parts on their front lawn. He tried to plant a (volunteer) tree to cover it up. Other than that, everyone else seems quite normal.

Although not embarrassed, many of the teardowns in our neighborhood are unsightly rentals that and aren't well maintained. Every week or so that I see one sold and being torn down I secretly say "yesssssssss," and mentally high five myself.

I hate that I live in a small HOA community that doesn't enforce the rules. So, it is perfectly acceptable to;

- keep your trash bins AT your front door
- have a window a/c unit
- chain up your dog on a carport
- use your garage as storage...fine, except then leave your garage door open the whole day so we can see your mess
- begin cutting down huge trees in your front yard and then stop halfway....for a few years!
- live under a moss covered roof

I live in Stepford. Everything is perfect.

no, not really. We don't like that our street is super busy, but I am not ashamed of my house at all.

Others trash our neighborhood sometimes, but we love it.

It occasionally bugs me that our neighborhood, where new homes are close to $2 million, nevertheless has a few obvious hoarders and one house that has been in a state of half-completion for roughly five years. But then I remind myself that I opted not to live in a neighborhood with an HOA, and it's really not for me to decide whether the best use of an old VW is to stuff it full of papers that, conservatively, date back to the mid-1970s.

No. And we have the smallest house (by far) of our friends.

My terrible front lawn embarrasses me. Grass will not grow there. It's so ugly, and I know our neighbors think we are fools to keep trying to grow grass year after year.

My furniture embarrasses me, because it's pretty run down and hodge-podge as far as styles go - it's mostly 2nd hand (not antiques) and nothing matches. But otherwise, no. I love our street (very sweet, modest 1940s houses, nice neighbors) and love my house, which we just remodeled. I guess my yard could use substantial improvement, but I don't think anyone's judging us for that just yet because everything got torn up during the remodeling and we just seeded it a month and a half ago. If it looks like this in a year then I'll be embarrassed, but hoping to do some landscaping in the spring, along with some interior decorating.

No. I don't like living in a crappy one bdrm but why would I be embarrassed?

What with all the talk of shirtshacks and whether you judge people by their neighborhoods, I'm curious if there's anything about your living situation that embarrasses you? I mean your house, street, lot, etc. Before you jump on me about being superficial, insecure, whatever, I already know that this question is all those things.

I'll go first. I live on the ugliest street in an otherwise decent neighborhood. Very close to a really ugly commercial area. Sometimes that embarrasses me when I invite new people over.
