I'm a new runner, running 3 miles every other day. Sometimes I do have to stop and walk, but I do not count those miles as part of my run. I use apps that track my distance, and always hit pause (and then resume) when I take a walking break. It pauses not only the time, but the distance.

Personally, I don't include walking in my running totals. I do about 100 miles a month and I'm religious about recording exactly how many miles run and how many miles walked. (I do a fair amount of that too, mostly separately of the running.)

I keep the two separate by wearing a GPS wristwatch and pausing it when I stop to walk.

If I'm racing and have to stop and walk briefly, I don't pause the watch because the time spent walking is part of the race pace. I only race a couple times a year so I don't worry about estimating the distance walked then.

This is a complicated question. there is a form of training called the run/walk method (sometimes Golloway after the guy who created it and promotes it) in which you absolutely count the walking portions. I don't use that method and when I find the need to take a walk break during a training run (like when I got socked by the humidity this weekend) I don't count it. But in a race, if I end up taking a walk break I do count it.

I'm curious about the responses you get to this. I would imagine most people who are running 20+ miles a week aren't doing that much walking (even a warm up might be a slow jog) so those miles are running. However, starting out, I think it's reasonable to count your total walk/run distance towards your weekly total.

I'm assuming you're tracking your mileage mostly the document your own progress and keep motivated (at least that why I do it). Maybe set up a spreadsheet with approximate walk distance, run distance, and total mileage so you can track it all. I'm sure your % time walking will decrease over time.

FWIW, the triathlon website I've used in the past to track workouts asks for walk/run mileage, so weekly mileage was a combined number. Personally, I feel like I'm "cheating" a bit on my running goals to include a long warm up or cool down walk, so might shave that off my numbers, but if I set out on a four mile run and for whatever reason end up doing more of a walk/run, I'd count it all. Ultimately though, it's kind of irrelevant what other people do. Why not shoot for 20 miles walk/run and then see if you can increase the % of that that is running? Some of the best advice I got when I was starting out was not to increase running mileage by more than 10% a week. If you're eager to achieve longer distances, including more walking in there will allow you to reach that goal faster without risking injury.

I think it is fine to walk between jogging to extend the run. But do the runners count even walking between the jogging towards their miles per week. I usually walk for a mile before running. And during running I also take few walking breaks and water breaks. I am new to running and do 2-4 miles occasionally. I want to reach 20 miles per week but wondering I am cheating if I add the miles that I walked instead of running. Thanks.
