Get a toy toolkit -- Ikea sells them too. This has been a source of entertainment for our son for years.

My 2-year-old daughter has always been drawn to cars/trains, so I can also recommend the IKEA trains and the rug. At Target, they have "B." brand toys which are great for this age, including these big soft cars: http://www.target.com/p/b-wheeee-ls-4-soft-cars/-/A-12026424#prodSlot=medium_1_31&term=b+toys
The B. Woofer Hound Dog guitar was also a hit.

One thing he'd probably like that you might find cheap right now is a beach ball. Lightweight, easy to kick/throw and not likely to knock any lamps over.

My 2 year old DS loves cars (any kind), Racin Rody (inflatable rocking horse), mega blocks and his soccer ball.

Anything with wheels.

The WOW brand trucks are a hit with my boy.

The Ikea train set is a great suggestion.

Fisher Price makes a "Steel Force" dump truck and bulldozer that are wonderful for that age group -- and they are sturdily built, can take a lot of use and abuse.

Melissa & Doug also has a great series called Whittle World -- airplane with luggage cart, school bus, fire truck. Our son loves them. The pieces are wooden and well-made.

He's 16 months old, he likes everything. Just looking for tried and true suggestions for things that can grow with him. Thanks for nothing!

After 2 girls, very girly girls who are now 9 and 4.5 we has a boy. Before anyone jumps all over me for perpetuating gender stereotypes my girls were always naturally drawn to "girl" toys. They love dolls, princesses, dress up, my little ponies ect. They also love magnatiles and blocks, art, running, jumping, rowdy play. But they both have never been drawn to cars, trucks, trains or other "boy" toys, therefore we don't really have any. Even at 16 months I have noticed my son being interested in cars, trains ect and I'd love to get him some toys that he'll like now and that can grow with him for a couple of years. I'll admit after 9 years of girls I am a lost puppy in the "boy" toy aisle. Of course I'm happy that he likes dolls, ponies and emulating his sisters, just want to let his boy curiosity be fulfilled as well. Happy to hear any suggestions!
