My costco had been out of the wild sockeye frozen salmon for a while. I was happy to see that it is back but a 2.5 bag is now $36! It used to be $22 or $24.

Farmed salmon, including Costo's the last time I looked, has food coloring to make it look "salmon color." Without it, it's grey.

The color isn't applied straight to the fish. It's added to their food. Salmon eat something that has a lot of caratene in it (krill, I think, I'm not sure) that naturally turns their flesh pink/orange. When they're farmed, they eat something else, but a carotene additive is added to their feed to give them that color.

WaPo Food section did a salmon-tasting with local chefs and food personalities (including Bob Kinkead) last week. They concluded that Costco Atlantic farmed salmon won hands-down on taste over all others, and was $5/lb. cheaper than the nearest competitor. Interestingly, the farmed salmon all came in ahead of all the wild salmon on taste.

Pains me to say it, as I want to be sustainable, and wild is still healthier for the fisheries than farmed. (Not necessarily for you, but for the ecosystem.) But the article also said that farming methods have gotten a lot better and are not as threatening as they used to be.

My folks buy salmon at Costco all the time and it is very good.

PP's suggestion of canned wild for affordability is a good one.

HMart has large flats from Canada (8.99 lb I believe). They also have salmon steaks on special sometimes.

I purchase ours at Harris Teeter. I doubt it's the least expensive, but they consistently have wild Alaskan and that's the only kind we purchase. To save quite a bit of money some weeks I will purchase canned wild Alaskan salmon and make quick salmon burgers. Do you think your DCs would eat salmon burgers? Much less expensive and a nice change once in a while.

I've gotten farmed and wild from Costco - can't beat the price and quality is decent.

I'd like to know this too. Wild Alaskan is the healthiest (but most expensive) correct?

Salmon is one of the only proteins that my DCs will eat. Where is the cheapest/healthiest place to purchase? Points for people who can post their price per pounds!!
