did not find the huts bunk by gender. rooms were mixed. maybe sometimes by gender.

I have been, several times: the lodges bunk by gender, guys in one room, girls in another. It is better than sleeping outdoors, and usually, 99% of people are totally exhausted, so whatever sounds or odors there are are not an issue. If there is bad weather, the place will seem like the Ritz. Also, I hiked up Mt Washington when I was like 25; it is a tough hike, even in summer. The tree line is like 2,000 feet below the summit, so you are very exposed. But it is amazing place!

There are also (IIRC) two lodges, which are at the bottom of the mtns instead of the top, so they are larger.

Yes. Fine for kids if they can do the hiking.
Mispah is especially kid and family friendly. It's lots of families' starter destination.

There was an article recently on them in either the Post or the New York Times. I don't recall any kid aspects being mentioned, but a lot of details were addresses that might be helpful or at least interesting to you.

There are 5 of them in the white mountains and I'm curious if any are suitable for kids who love to hike.
