+1. My favorite novel since I was 12, I've read it probably 20 times. You do have to look past the racism. I just take it as a reflection of what attitudes were at the time. If you have critical thinking skills, this is not difficult.

No, once the slaveholders started fighting a war and then tried to survive in the postwar environment, their lives were certainly not carefree. As I recall that was half the plot - Scarlet trying to figure out how to survive, when even as a white woman, she had little autonomy and control over her life. As I recall that was a pretty interesting part of the plotline for me as a young person.

Not justifying slaveholding or any romantic notions about the Confederacy -- Scarlet and company deserved to struggle! -- just quibbling a bit with OP about how she/he characterized the plot.
