Cut the crap. Most of the people on DCUM are white and live in nice areas, not being pg county.

She's saying that because the housing costs are dramatically lower compared to DC, NOVA, Moco, and pretty much every other county in the metro. This suggests lower demand to live in PG.

I also really enjoy living in PG. I enjoy that I'm not subjected to the same rat race as most parts of the metro.

I just don't think you can judge a school by test scores or some arbitrary ranking like great schools and I refuse to be so pessimistic that the school around the corner will never be good enough.

I think there are good things happening here and I just don't buy into the idea that going to one of the "best" schools in Montgomery County or wherever gives your child a leg up. Who decides what constitutes a "good" school anyway?

Anecdotally, I see plenty of kids who go on to do amazing things from Prince George's County. And the kids I know who have graduated from Bowie or ERHS seem to be cool non-entitled kids comfortable with diversity be it economic or cultural. I'd much rather my kids grow up here than in some ridiculously privileged environment. I think the life experiences my kids get on a daily basis far outweigh any negatives. I think the grassroots education movement is more established in DC too. The charter movement started over twenty years in DC, and now you are seeing the fruits of their labor. Also, the city is operating with a surplus and has spendt millions of dollars to improve the educational resources for its residents.

It seems like PG has a well-organized squeaky wheel in some parts of the county but lacking in other parts that are really underserved--mine being one of them.

I don't see the inactivity as a good thing from my side of the county, I see the lack of snarky-ness and willingness to help people when they post questions a good thing.

Although I have spend countless hours trying to make in-roads with the school system, I am not very hopefull that there will be a excellent public school option for my child when I need it. I don't say this lightly, and it has brought me to tears many times.

Most recently, a neighbor was pushing around her newly adopted baby in a stroller, she was so proud and I offered up everything that I knew as a mother to help her. She will some welcome two additional adopted children in her home. When I turned and went back in the house, I thought to myself, I wish we had a nice neighborhood school tht those kids could attend with my child.

I think it's a good thing too.

I think people in PG probably have better things to do.

Honestly, it's probably more an issue of people looking for answers on local neighborhood listserves.

I try to keep up with the news on PG but nothing interesting seems to have happened lately. I guess we're all waiting to see what the new CEO and school board come up with?

I try to check in here regularly. I am a product of P.G. County schools (graduated HS in 1987), and my DH graduated from PGC in 1981. We have 4 kids, 3 of whom attend/ed PGC schools. I have only a HS sophomore still at home, and she is at Eleanor Roosevelt, which is an amazing school. I try to chime in whenever a question arises.

I also have a hard time seeing it as a negative. The Private Schools, DC schools, and more MoCo oriented public boards are way less civil than this forum. Sure, there's more action, but a lot of it is just really unkind and disturbing. I'm sure some of those are trolls, but probably not all of them. Fewer responses over here, but the responses tend to be well-intentioned and helpful.

I like to think it speaks well of us, actually. What questions do you have? Are you the one in the midst of a separation and move?

I'm looking to move to PG, but am a little disheartened by how little action there is on this board. Where are the PG moms (and dads)??
