My sons haircut is $16 & I just give them the $20 & let them keep the $4. Life is too short, & they do a good job!

I tip a minimum of $5 on cheap haircuts. But it's perfectly acceptable to ask for change in ones. Then, they don't know if you are tipping 2, 3, or 4 bucks.

If it really bothers you, just make sure you have enough ones when you walk in next time.

I'd tip $1 and call it a day.

I would have no qualms asking for 2 bucks back. 30 percent tip is ridiculous.

This is stupid. As a wait person there are a great many people out there who say nothing about what's in the checkbook, they don't say if they need change, or don't need change, or if they are splitting a check on two cards, or if they want change for the 20 and the bill on the card.

So when there is cash in the book I always ask if the person needs change, it saves me a trip back to your table to ask you five minutes later. The fact you would deduct something off my tip for asking this is absurd

Getting OT, but asking for the money back reminds me of a personal peeve: Handing a waitperson money and they say "Do you need change?"

I would not call these people "professionals." Tradespeople, maybe.

I have absolutely no problem handing them a $20 and saying "can I have $2 back, please". I do the same in a cab when I only have a $20 and the fare plus tip is less. 20% is a generous tip so the person should be fine with it and completely used to it.

OP here. I should have noted that they don't take charge (it's a barber-type place). Otherwise, 17:01, that's what I do when I get my own hair cut or whatever.

Just use a credit card and then you can tip the exact amount you want...

DC got a haircut and the charge was $15. All I had was a $20 so even though 20% would have been $3, I felt weird taking two of the singles from the change and handing her back the other three. OTOH, $2 would get me a cup of coffee. What would you have done?
