I just spent $38 on eBay for a Despicable Me costume for my 7 year old. That is the upper limit for what I will spend. I don't spend a lot on my or my kids' regular clothing--get a lot at thrift and consignment shops. But for Halloween it is something special. And my kids wear their costumes all year. When my son was 3, he wore out that Spider-Man costume!

20 bucks at old navy. Wears it all year for dress up.

Normally I buy cheap ones - never spent more than $25 total for all three. But for some reason this year, they are really into dressing up and they are into the details. Cost me a fortune.

Thanks for all the responses. My daughter isn't into dressing up as much these days, so costumes generally get one use. We have been passing the nicer ones on to friends/neighbors, so at least someone else will get to enjoy them. We have decided to offer her a set amount to spend: her choice whether she uses that to add to something she already has or spend it all on a new costume.

We spend 50 on each costume each year.

Take her to goodwill and make her pick from there.

I always make the kids costumes but spend a lot on supplies. For example, the princess dress I'll make will be about $50 in supplies but similar ones on Etsy are $300. My daughter will wear this several times and if I were to ever re-sell it, I'd get a lot of money back for it.

Personally, I can't stand the cheap Target dress ups, they are so poorly made and your kid can't even play dress up in them since they don't last. My kids are small right now (2 and 4) so they love to dress up year round.

We always make dd's costumes. I have never bought a costume. We spend mayyyyybe $10-15 total.

I spend a LOT of money on Halloween costumes. My kids usually wear them to 3-5 events. We are sort of into Halloween at our house.

I buy whatever they want but it comes out of a "holiday" fund that we set up for each kid that gets X amount in it every year for xmas, bday, halloween, and easter. So theoretically a more expensive costume means less expensive something else. Of course they dont realize this or realize if their costume is expensive or not. (they are 6 and under)

Yes, we are a one kid family. DD plays dressup with costume and/or we donate it. Probably would not spend as much if we had more kids.

I think that the costumes my 8 yr old daughter is marking in the catalogs are pretty expensive ( the cheapest is $ 35 and many are $50+). We can afford it, but they seem like a waste for something she will only wear once. It seems to be the norm in her circle of friends. Am I being too frugal/rigid about this?
