+1 depends on the size of your house. I replaced my furnace in January for about $4k and my ac unit in July for about $3300 (awesome year). Our house is a colonial in arlington (1940s).

It sounds like you are getting a quote to replace the entire HVAC system and not just the air compressor.

That sounds like a lot. I would question exactly what you need to replace ... even if the A/C is gone, why do you also have to replace the furnace? I guess more info on the type of system you will have would be helpful.

We replaced our A/C about 4 years ago -- the compressor unit and some related stuff -- and it was about 4K. And I've gotten similar quotes for a new furnace.

I would ask contractors what they can keep with your current system. If it's 9 years old, maybe the compressors have to go but not everything.

Do get more quotes, but our system was new when we bought our house and it died after about 8 years. We got comps but the first guy was right - like everything, including water heaters, there is a life expectancy so you do have to monitor.

You don't need all the fancy stuff this will work fine and will actually be less parts and crazy add ons to maintain.

We purchased a house that is now about nine years old, from the original owner who did not take great care of it. Out of nowhere, our A/C just stopped working. We figured it was a minor fix, but there was absolute no freon in the system and it needs to be replaced. We are getting quotes between 8-11.5k. I just cannot even wrap my head around this expense. After just putting 20 percent down on a 3/4 million $ house and then needing to buy a new car on top of that, our savings is not in good shape. We can afford to pay for this repair, but will then be so low in savings that we would be in big trouble if another emergency came up. Are these things really this expensive? How does the average American drop 8 or 10k with a week's notice? I had NO idea that this would be so much. And we just bought the house 6 mos ago !
