My friends and in Great Falls could never afford to live in DC (said no one, ever).

In that case, the prior post seemed to invite an equally nasty response, but NoVa is full of people who could afford to live in DC were they so inclined. Most of the high-income zip codes in the region are in NoVa now.

I know one family who lives in the western part of McLean that rented an apartment in NW after their son got into St. Albans. But they didn't sell the house in McLean, and they still spend weekends there.

Otherwise, while I know people who've moved from places like Herndon to McLean, or from Vienna to Arlington, I don't know people with school-age kids who have moved from NoVa to DC. Of course, there are people with kids who stay in DC, but that is a different question.

I love living in DC, even though my life doesn't include a two-car garage. Or a garage at all. City living requires compromises from most people; parts of the city with two-car garages aren't all that different from the suburbs.

There are plenty of areas with 2 car garages and tons of parking in the District...if you can afford it. The main reason we wouldn't return to DC is the lack of parking and the ghetto government/higher taxes. We equate the DC government to slum landlords who seek just to make a profit.

I live in N Arlington, so no. We will never live in DC -- I'm a closer commute to my job from here than in most of NW, and the schools are awesome.

Another non-NOVAer here, but we moved from upper NW to NE DC and haven't looked back. We have two kids and could afford a nice house in a great neighborhood, which we could not do in upper NW. Plus, our new neighborhood is lively and full of kids.

I think the city-to-suburbs move with kids just isn't the "necessity" that it used to be. It really depends on your priorities.

Don't know from Nova to DC. Nova is a whole 'nother country. but I know a number of families who have moved from Bethesda/CC to DC. Most had kids in private school, worked in DC and found out that they spent so much time in NWDC they just moved there. Plus if you're going to spend $1.5m on a house why not do it in a place like Cleveland Park that will appreciate faster than any other area.

If so, why did you do it?

DH and I used to live in DC and we're now in Alex. Bouncing around the idea of moving back. Would love to hear from those who have -- are you glad you did?
