I used to call her 'ma' but then when the kids came along and they called her 'mama', I did too.

First name. If its a birthday card to me she signs her first name. If its an anniversary card or something to us both, she signs mom and dad. I never really thought about what she signs, I just prefer to call her by first name and no one ever really pushed the issue in one direction or another.

I call my MIL by her first name and always have, ever since she was introduced to me as "My mom, FirstName".

I think you're reading too much into it. She thinks of you as a daughter, which is a compliment. She's not trying to replace your mom.

I have always called my mother in law by her first name. Yet, she insists on signing everything she gives me Love, Mom (or Love, Mom and Dad but I know FIL doesn't care). I would never ever call her Mom for many reasons. I'm perfectly happy calling her by her first name but I feel like by signing everything Mom she is pushing the issue and it makes me uncomfortable. Am I reading too much into this?
