I should have added the caveat of some specialized interest (such as engineering at Purdue—even better a specific engineering discipline) that might draw a student to one of these schools from the DC metro area. Although I remain a bit skeptical about identifying talent that precisely at that stage.

Agree. Those are fine schools, but none of them is as good as UVA or W&M, and I'm not convinced any is better than UMD. Maybe if my kid were choosing between some third-tier local school and Minnesota....

Kansas is strong in architecture and urban planning, and has a great honors program. It has a strong campus culture and great sports teams. But it's in Kansas. Great place to spend 4 years and then move on though.

Oh, I don't know. It depends on the major. I think Purdue has a good national presence in Engineering.

Most large state schools provide an excellent education for the students in that state. Why would anyone from this area go to Kansas or Georgia, MN etc unless you really want to be in that place or there was some specialized program that the school was known for? Out of state tuition can be really high, and most state schools offer pretty equivalent educational experience, with some, but few, exceptions.

Actually underappreciated colleges are any that don't put students into huge financial debt. Private schools are great for parents who can pay or for kids who can get scholarships; otherwise STate U is the way to go for undergrad
