I'm the OP from a couple weeks ago. My DC is in 6th at Stuart Hobson, the class size for academic subjects is ~32. There are ~140 6th graders, split into 5 sections for math, English/language arts, social studies, science (earth science in 6th grade). If evenly divided, that would be 28 per section.

One of the 5 sections in each academic subject is "honors". I believe, but haven't seen class lists, and my kids doesn't count the number of other kids in the class, that the 'honors' section may be a bit larger. The principal told me that if a class has 35 kids, the teacher gets bonus pay, so there might be classes up to 34 students.

Overall, very happy with the combination of offerings at S-H for our family, but feel that the class size is a bit larger than most other middle schools (as evidenced by this thread), and wonder about hiring more teachers to lower class size.

This is true - Latin has even smaller classes in their new building - 14-16 kids per class.

What is the school OP? Why do people forget to mention that?

My child also at Deal has a 1st period class of 28, but the rest of his classes are about the 17-22 range. I have no problem with it.

My DC at Deal has a very large first period (about 30) and then the rest of the classes average in the 18-22 range. The large first period has to do with the fact that you must meet with a team teacher for first period/homeroom (math, science, English, social studies).

My DC is a 6th grader at DCPS middle school with class sizes of around 30. Is this typical? How big are classes in your DCPS / Charter's 6th grade?
