NP here. It's definitely true. Wisconsin was the school you went to when you didn't get into Michigan or Cornell. Penn State was viewed as regional school like Maryland or Rutgers. Totally different league.

No, it is very believable (PSU alum here).

Wisc is a sexy school with the crowd that goes to elite ny preps or dc area.

Madison is 'charming', state college is a shithole IMO.

Wisc has better student life IMO.

Wisc has stronger social sciences which is what most kids from elite prep schools go into.

QoL, Location, social science strength....these are way more important.

Ask yourself...where would more NYC Preps rather go...Cal Tech or Brown?

That's why.

Your peers interested in science and engineering were probably at minimum Carnegie Mellon quality and more importantly could afford it (CMU is stingy in aid in my experience).

But for the average middle class public school going northeast person interested in engineering and science, PSU is a big target.

Even WSJ 3-4 years ago had a survey where they asked recruiters at f500 firms where they liked to recruit at PSU came out on top.

F500, industrial, defense contractors...i.e. typical companies and industries that hire bright 'middle class' kids but not necessarily elite strivers love recruiting at psu.

W has a great communications school and a lot of good research opportunities (not necissarily in hard science). I went to an elite NY prep school where many kids applied to Wisconsin as a safety. No one ever applied to Penn State for some reason even though it was a lot closer.

I'm surprised to see Penn State ranked ahead of Wisconsin in the 2014 US News rankings. It's not only the first time that I've seen Penn State ranked ahead of Wisconsin, it's the first time I've seen Penn State considered as a peer school to Wisconsin. Does anyone have enough knowledge of both schools to comment on the pluses and minuses of each?
