Her haircut is terrible in my opinion but I like her tattoos because I have some myself . Unfortunately we don't share body shape, I tall and skinny, while she's much shorter and curvy, so I really can't use most of her outfits. I'd look like a Christmas tree . But, she is very wise and I love her attitude and how helpful she is if you write to her.

Think of a celebrity that you like, and google or pinterest their name with "style" and you can get inspiration that way. Examples that I like are Olivia Palermo and Jessica Alba. You can find some cute outfit ideas that way.

If you use a nordstrom stylist, are you expected to tip them???

Go to your nearest sephora and ask them to do your makeup for you. Tell them you want the works: primer, foundation, concealer, highlighter, bronzer, blush, lipstick, eyeliner, mascara, etc. Buy some of the products they use to freshen up your everyday look. Sometimes I'm wearing a great outfit but I still feel shitty because I don't think my makeup looks fresh. FWIW, my favorite brands are benefit, nars, Stila, urban decay and Tarte.


Check out www.asos.com ... They have a lot of great, stylish/trendy clothes for all ages. Don't get too turned off by the selection of crop tops and daisy duke styled shorts being marketed for the teen/early 20s crowd, they really have a great selection for fashionable women of all ages.

Check out DSW for a nice pair of trendy boots for fall. They sell all kinds of designers for discounted prices including Steve Madden and Frye.

Go to Loehmanns (I'm not from DC so I'm not sure if there is one in your area but they also have a website- wwww.loehmanns.com) for a nice leather bag for fall. They sell a lot of the same brands as Nordstrom, but for much less. They also have a few discounted high-end designer bags as well (Gucci, Prada)

I feel that if you stick to stores like Nordstrom, White House Black Market, etc. You're limiting yourself and probably spending more money than you have to.

Some good trends for fall 2013 include: classic leather bags in neutral tones, matte nail polish, peplum, distressed leather combat boots, and denim jackets.

I use Polyvore. Find an item that you already own and look at all the sets people make with that item and see if you can create those outfits with what you already have.

In Style magazine is good for this (ie figuring out what is on trend and how to wear it), and Lucky is good for figuring out where to buy. I like Refinery29.com too.

I have had great luck with Nordstrom's personal shoppers - they picked out things in my price range, for my body type, and helped me figure out what style I am.

The white house black market near me always puts lots of extras in the dressing room and they help you to make outfits. Actually, every one I have been to does that so I think it is a corporate philosophy of sorts. Yes, it can be seen as pushing more clothes on you, but they are usually right, and you don't have to buy it all.

Does anyone shop Chicos? Do they do the same?

Pinterest....women's fashion gives me great ideas and color combinations. I just adjust the outfits to my taste.

You could try a service like Tog and Porter. Lucky Magazine does have some good ideas as well.

I have been using the personal shoppers at nirdstroms for years. I hate shopping so I give them my size and they will fill a room. But for your first appt go in and tell them exactly what you said here. They are free and they don't need a big budget--I once called and told my woman there I wanted a perfect white shirt for work and my budget was $70.

Also once you have a few things you like, I love a "uniform". I have four nice work dresses and I just wear them every week. It's boring but I like not thinking about it.

i really need help. i'm 36 and used to be hip - i even lived in nyc. i had great clothes and wonderful outfits and even had relatively cute stuff during my maternity leaves... but kids are now 4 and 2 and i just don't know what is cool or what would look good on me... i work FT out of the home and am in healthcare in critical care, so i can get away with wearing scrubs. which i do, a LOT, so i know have 3 "work" staple (boring) outfits that i rotate on meeting/office days.... ugh.

what can i do?

i complained to DH and he subscribed to glamour magazine for me and it isn't any help - there are some great outfits, but always the $500 range - and the knock off would look bad on me - too young. and they have a page where they suggest 5 pieces and give 30 ways to wear them, but its SOOO bad - they picked an ugly blouse (a big print orange and black number) from target or kohl's or somewhere and all the women "threw it on" over their regular outfits with big belts, or cute handbags and all i could think was "if you took that ugly shirt off, it would be a fine outfit,"

Banana republic used to be a staple in my closet, but now they carry so much volume that i can't tell what is good versus what's crap... and a lot of it seems to be crappy...

so i just feel hopelessly out of style and clearly, i don't even know where to look/go,
