It has become much more public than before. I imagine it is to keep the sponsors happy. Prize money increased something like 40% this year and I think the sponsors want recognition.

Individual sports emphasize the purse. I've heard it before at ATP tournaments I've attended.

In sports like tennis and golf, I don't mind how big the purse is at all because you only get it if you win. There are no 'contracts'.

Off the court/course (marketing) earnings are different but that's not what's being discussed here.

Okay, I haven't watched tennis in quite awhile, but I just happened upon the trophy ceremony where Mary Carillo was presenting the trophies to Serena and the runner up (sorry, didn't catch who it was). As part of the interview/presentation process, Carillo cited how much money they were earning for the tournament. What the heck? Is that vulgar or what? Or has this been the norm, and I've just missed it? I realize professional sports is a business and money is a huge, critical part of it, but it seems crass to acknowledge it so baldly during the trophy presentation. Better to stick with talk about sportsmanship, work ethic, natural talent, etc. You know, the stuff that makes sports actually worthwhile.
