Hard to say. There is a humanities MS magnet at Eastern and both a STEM and Humanities magnet at Roberto Clemente. If each is around 100 kids, then that's 425 or so spots. There are about 350 HGC spots, and the number of kids who applied at each varies. The principal at ours said that ~350 applied for 50 slots, but I think this is higher than normal. We're probably not going to apply to the MS magnet because of the long commute; over an hour and a half on the bus. I know several other kids in the same boat. It's my feeling that the MS might pull from a smaller area because they're not spread out like the HGCs, but I have no data to back that up. I've heard of kids that didn't get into the HGC who made it into the MS magnet and vice-versa.

I think RC has only 100 spots, 50 for each program.

If that's the case, then I think the MS is probably more competitive to get into.

Does RC Math magnet also have a neighborhood quota similar to TP?

Is everyone here talking about the same thing? There is a Primary Magnet at Takoma Elementary and a STEM magnet at Takoma Park Middle School.

At my child's HGC, 16 out of 23 who applied were accepted.

I've heard that the HGCs have about a 20% acceptance rate (but of course with both not everyone applies).

I was told that in 2012, about 500 kids applied to Eastern for 100 spots, and about 600 kids applied to TPMS for 125 spots.

TPMS is harder to get into than Eastern but only slightly, in terms of percentage accepted.

Not all the HCG kids who apply to the MS magnets get in -- my impression was that about half of them went on to a magnet but that doesn't tell you who applied.

MS magnets pull from a much larger area (about half the county or more) than the invididual HCGs do.

Does anyone know how many students are accepted each year to the magnet program at Takoma Park?
