It is essentially a sitter at night. The nurse would bring me the baby (she was with him in on another floor) and I would BF him. As soon as I was done, I would hand him back to her. I didn't have to change his diaper, soothe him, etc. I could just roll over and go right back to sleep.

She became invaluable when DS developed reflux and colic. There was no soothing him or getting him back to sleep. He was awake 21 hours a day. She could somehow get him to sleep and, more importantly, DH and I could get some sleep so we could function for the hours she wasn't there.


She "somehow got him to sleep" because he was used to being soothed by her!

I simply can't imagine a life where this is an option. Not because of the money but because it seems so starange to me to invite a strange into the house to care for a newborn while everyone else is asleep. I am genuinely curious... perhaps I am missing something -- this does not seem scary to anyone else?

NYC Baby Nurse Rates:

Singleton: Ranges from $200 to $300 a day
Twins: Ranges from $300 to $400 a day
Triplets: Ranges from $450 to $600 a day

For all of the above, there are agencies who charge hourly fees as opposed to a set fee.

I paid 800 a week for live in including night duty of bringing baby to me to breastfeed. this year. But she was an immigrant who didn't speak English. She caught up with sleep during the day. Apart from helping with baby duties she cooked for baby and I. I had a separate cleaner.

$25/hour but there is a nightly minimum. Don't remember if it is 6 or 8 hours.

Not that you asked but I would keep your child in daycare, the change of a new baby is hard & changing routine (staying home with you & the baby and then going back to daycare 12 weeks later) will be harder! On your original question we were quoted 20-40$ an hour but opted to have my mom come stay for 3 weeks instead.

I paid 350/day for round the clock help - she asked for afternoon naps but never ended up taking them

Interested to know what people have spent on baby nurses? We are having our second in February and trying to weigh the costs of keeping our older child in daycare during my maternity leave or hiring someone to help at night.
