As someone who has experienced both a school fire before, I know for a fact that during a life and death crisis no one has time to place shoes on 20 plus children. Do you want your child standing outside without shoes on in the snow while we wait for the fire or police department to come?

If there was a fire in your house in the middle of the night would everyone stop to put their shoes on? Your logic doesn't work.

very bulky sneakers and boots make it uncomfortable to sit crosslegged on the floor in my classroom experience. A good shoe for the early years is not too bulky. It's always a pain on snow/rain boot day. I wish more kids kept spares at school on those days. I'd rather allocate a few minutes for shoe changing than deal with the wiggling and complaining!

Napping with shoes on is not a big issue. Both DCs had this policy in their day care.

To prevent my kids feet from getting too sweaty or stinky - I made sure they wore a fresh pair of cotton socks each time; they wore sneakers rather than leather shoes that I washed every week in the washer; and sprayed their shoes with odor-eaters each day before making them wear it.

Make sure that their shoes are not on the tight side as feet swell up in the day time and with a sweat soaked socks the issue is compounded.

My kids' preschool had the same rule. Shoes on at all times, even for napping.

My kid has always napped in shoes-- both day care and preschool.

My kid's preschool doesn't have them take off their shoes either. I was surprised at first but it's not a big deal.

If you kid does have athlete's foot, I don't think the airing out is going to help. Ask you pediatrician about it. Perhaps you can just put some powder in his shoes as a preventative measure.

I'm betting that is a big part of the "emergency" reason. Parents send their kids, girls mostly, in strappy sandals, fuzzy boots, shoes with clips, laces, all which the child would never be able to get on alone.

This. The entire nap time would be taken up by taking shoes off and putting them back on. This is scraping the barrel in terms of finding a complaint.

My boy can run faster in his bare feet.

If he has athlete's foot he needs to keep that shit covered up while around other people with feet (so, most other people basically).

Can he not air his feet out at home? My DD's K does not do naps but in preschool they didn't take off their shoes either. They all slept just fine. I would pick another battle. Maybe a battle that is actually important.

Most K classes do not have naptime.

My kid, although 5 YO, normally will still take a nap if given the opportunity. He is in a private K at a center that is infant through K. I was there one day to drop something off and I noticed all the kids had their sneakers on during nap time. There are mats on the floor, they sleep on top of a sheet, they have a pillow and a blanket and some have stuffed animals but they all still had their shoes on. Who naps with shoes on? My kid has had althlete's foot a few times in the past year so I would really like for him to take his shoes off for the hour a day to let them air out (and surprisingly he doesn't have smelly feet) but the teacher told me that they keep their shoes on in case of an emergency and that this rule comes from the director. It seems unreasonable to me but I am new at the kindergarten thing. Is this typical for other K classes? Would like to know how they do it at your K class. Thanks.
