PP, I think there are couple of factors contributing to the negative comments. I have grown up in Va and Md, and there has always been rivalry between Va & Md. Historically, a lot of Jews lived in Montgomery Co. and PG County is predominately AA-Black. They considered Nova "Southern" because it used to be mostly Whites and it attracts other Whites that move to the area.

Also, Nova has attracted more high paying jobs than Md. People go where the jobs are... some posters do not want to acknowledge this. But there has been a gravitational shift towards Nova while Md. has atrophied. Another factor is Va has lower income taxes for individuals.

I say, live where you feel comfortable. But, you will not regret your decision to live in Nova. You will know quickly how silly these Nova haters are...



Spare me. We like MoCo more because the schools are superior, the neighborhoods are prettier, the restaurants are better, the politics are more in line with our values (Virginia politicians are insane), and we'd rather live in an area associated with life industries than death industries (biotech and medical research, not defense contractors).

I like Alexandria, but the schools are not good. I like parts of Fairfax, but the obsession there with AAP is offputting. Arlington, on the other hand, I find bland beyond belief. I could never live there.

We moved from Chevy Chase to Vienna about 10 years ago (mainly because of DH's commute; I work downtown). We really like it here and have no regrets.

Where do you work? In this area, never underestimate the ability of a crappy commute to suck the lifeblood out of you. So if you work in DC, then being near the metro in NOVA is good. If you work in Maryland, then stay in Maryland.

Next question is what is your budget, and do you need public schools? I would have happily lived near Old Town, but I have kids and don't want to pay for private. Arlington has good schools, but the ones that are perceived as "better" come with a hefty price tag. If you want to rent a house, expect to pay very big bucks. Condos/apartments are okay, but definitely not if you have more than two children (and personally, I wouldn't do it for more than one).

If you like the vibe of Arlington, then move there.

Fairlington, The Arlington (off Columbia pike) are older historic town homes with tons of young families and great places to live. You can easily find something to rent there- both have a pool and other amenities.

Interesting considering the large Hispanic population in NOVA.

Do a search in the real estate forum for Arlington. There are different cultures within Arlington.

Thanks so much! When we moved here we heard moco was the "it" place to live but we keep asking ourselves why? It's great but by no means amazing. We like the vibe of Arlington and Alexandria. Do many families live in Arlington? We are brand new to the east coast so any info is helpful. I saw there were a lot of college kids near gmu.

I went from Nova to MoCo. I would go back in a heartbeat. Born and raised in Rockville. Moved to McLean after graduation. I like nova so much more than MoCo. However, kids schools are in MoCo, My job, And DHs job are also here. It didn't make sense for the entire family to be commuting every day.

We'd be moving because so far we like the vibe there better. We are renters so picking up and moving isn't a big deal. Anyone ever do this? We like Arlington.
