I went from a similar degree to high school teaching at a private school. Best thing I ever did. Definitely apply at a private school; get your foot in as a long-term sub. Do not bother with getting an education degree.

My impression is that at least for K-8 education they care more about pedagogy than subject matter expertise, so you would definitely want to check out masters programs that lead to certification.

Private schools have more flexibility of course.

I have a Phd in lifesciences, working as a scientist in hardcore bench research setting and seriously want to switch to a teaching career. How hard is it to make the change. Does my Advanced degree help me or hurt? I love teaching science and am passionate about imparting it to the middle school kids rather than age at the bench. How should I proceed? Should I take any courses in education or directly apply for certification? TIA
