Happened to us too. Lasted about a day or two. Just leave them be and they'll go away on their own.

I had this in the spring. I freaked out and thought they were termites. Exterminators came and said they were winged ants that swarm for a short while. They were not visible in a few days.

termites do swarm. Most people don't know that.

Ugh, these were everywhere tonight at an outdoor event we attended. Awful! Maybe a city wide thing?

We used to have that - totally freaked me out when they completely covered the steps to our house. They weren't termites, and the swarms got less and less over a few years.

I had an invasion of winged carpenter ants in the spring. Swarming is usually seasonal, no?

Yup, that's my guess as well.

Adults are leaving the main colony to start their own new colonies. Not a big deal, soon you won't see these winged ants anymore. Double check to make sure they are not termites (check google for how to tell differences) or carpenter ants.

Out of the blue, light brown ants have emerged from our side garden and are swarming all over each other in circles, most regular ants but lots of them winged (they aren't termites, they're actually ants). There are a few small (1/4 inch?) hills near them with large openings. I have never seen this in this spot before, and there are about 5 clumps of them! I poured Terro ant killer on them and, while they usually stop and all crowd around it to drink, a few are but most are zooming right over it to keep going in circles. What is this??
