I do notice a difference that is pretty profound. Americans can be extreme. In my social circle the vast majority of adults are hardcore about exercise. Many people doing triathalons, marathons, crossfit, and I myself did an Ironman. Being athletic is a way of life for many people I know. Additionally i will be the first to admit that most of us also are in it for vanity.

We wen to Europe for a month and did London, Paris, and the beach in Spain. I did see that most Europeans were smaller than Americans, but holy shit they looked flabby and formless. I don't care how thin you are...you look no better than an obese person when all you do is smke cigs, eat cheese, and drink wine all day. What I saw nude on the beach will be forever and unfortunately burned into my brain.

It appears to me when it comes to health and nutrition there are to "Americas" and both are complete opposites of each other.

Yeah, Parisian women don't get fat. Take a drive through Normandy sometime.

And yes, it is common in France for children to use pacifiers until they are 5 or so.

You don't even have to go all the way to Normandy even a stroll through one of the malls outside of Paris will show you that French women do get fat indeed.

I live in Paris and my daughters have had more sugar here than they did in the US. Gouter is usually a sweet treat from one of the bakeries. In the US, snack was usually fresh fruit. The only difference is that we walk everywhere in Paris. They spend a lot of time playing outside. They do eat better here at daycare and at school than they did in the US. Schools do not offer chicken nuggets or pizza on the menu. Children here are just as misbehaved as their American counterparts.

I read it. I was a little disappointed that it read more like a memoir than anything else.

As for the eating...basically the author learned that French kids (in daycare and at home) eat whatever is given to them. Parents provide thoughtful, nutritious and labor-intensive meals, therefore there's no short-order cooking.

Absolutely no snacking. Except, what they do is: breakfast, lunch, gouter (small amount of food) after school, then a late dinner. It irritated me that the author made such a point of railing against North American's penchant for snacking, yet she doesn't acknowledge that the 'gouter" is obviously a "snack."

And, that's about all I got from it. It's an easy read.

I just came back from a month long trip to France and every time I saw a BIG kid using the paci, or misbehaving in a restaurant, or parents pleading with kids to eat, or sit, or whatever (what we all do at one point or another), I couldn't help but remember of DCUM and how "you" guys keep saying the french have it right - and citing that book "raising up bebe" (or some like that). What a bunch of lie!

It was not my experience AT ALL! Really OLD kids (4, 5,6, etc) sitting on strollers, sucking on pacis, throwing tantrums, etc.

And I am not even American myself, so it is not like I have a grudge against French people. Quite the opposite - If I could, I would leave there.

The book made me feel like total shit. Seriously. I'm glad to hear some of the book might be total shit!

Why do they use pacifiers so long? Curious.

I haven't read it but know the premise. My sil lives in France and she said the french toddlers she knows (several different families--not the whole population, but not one kid either) don't eat everything, have paci's until they are 4 and aren't all that controlled.

If you have read it? Find anything useful in it? I picked up at a bargain sale but haven't started reading it yet.
