No, you do not have to be worried about brain amoeba after Labor Day. This amoeba only grows when there is an extended period of really hot weather. That is not a problem during this time of the year. In fact most of the cases are a lot further South. There was one case in VA, but that again was during a long period of hot weather. Calm down, it's ok. I used to be a whitewater kayaker and was in lots and lots of rivers. Rolling my kayaking, sometimes swimming when my roll didn't work. Never had a problem. Was in the Potomac, Shenandoah, Lower Yough, etc. No worries. It is just hard to go lake swimming after Labor Day because all of the college kids are back at school, so they don't open the beaches.

It has been and will continue to be in the 90s the next few weeks.

Catoctin Creek Park in Frederick has a great stream that you can wade in. Not deep up enough to truly swim, but great for toddlers.

I just came back from kayaking on the Potomac near Fletcher's. I saw so many people swimming with their kids in the water off their boats. I cringed when the splash off the paddle landed on my leg. I guess it's okay, but I don't know if I'd do it.

Actually, we were thinking about a day trip there this week...I just called the park office @ Cunningham falls, they said no guards, swim ropes up after Labor Day - but, kids are welcome to swim in the water "up to their knees". I guess it's "swim @ your own risk" after Labor Day...

OP here. Cunningham Falls has no swimming after Labor Day; I'm assuming the same is true of the other MD State Parks.

I should clarify, I'm looking for something for a little kid (4yo), so a 3 mile hike is a bit much. Basically, I want to go to Cunningham Falls the weekend after Labor Day, but I can't!!!

Cunningham Falls State Park has a swimming lake. Lake Anna State Park is another good one. Our favorite spot is a 3 mile hike up the Cedar Run side of White Oak Canyon where there is a deep jump-in-able waterfall pool (haven't taken the kids yet, it's pretty deep in the middle.) Good luck!

I can't think of any. Maybe the Shenandoah River? After Labor Day it is a bit cold to swim outside.

Where can we go after labor day to swim in outdoor lakes or rivers? Ideally somewhere within an hour and a half of the city. Would love any ideas!!
