Sounds like they haven't been invited to many social gatherings if they think this is normal. Start inviting them so they can learn.

yeah...it sounds like they really aren't hosting anything.
Most casual BBQs I've been invited to, might ask for everyone to bring a side dish/dessert to share, but the hosts provide the meat, drinks, and certainly the chairs.
I wonder if they will be providing things like plates, napkins, etc? I wouldn't count on it!

Our family was invited to a BBQ but the invite says: Please bring own meat or fish to grill; bring a salad or dessert; BYOB; and please bring lawn chairs. Also, if it rains, the party is cancelled.
I really like this family but this is too much work for me! This does not seem like much of an invite honestly. I bet we would not be allowed inside hence the rain cancellation notice.
I host one or two cookouts per years and I provide everything, including lots of chairs and food and beer. When anyone asks what they can bring, I say, NOTHING, you really don't have to bring anything but if you want to - I tell them what I am serving and tell them they could bring anything they think complements the menu. And I hold cookouts even if it is raining. WE just move the fun indoors. sometimes, it is hard to tell if it is raining or just a passing shower or whatever, so I don't say cancelled if it is raining.
What does anyone else think?
