Our sink is in our peninsula and I like it because I have a full view of what's going on in our open plan first floor.
I finally found a small, low, dish-rack that's the same bronze tone as the wood on our peninsula, and I put the sponge there.

How many inches overhang you have? You can install new countertop with bigger overhang and problem will be solved.

We have this configuration and I love it. It also looks out in the window and I can enjoy our view while doing some dishes. No issues with wetness whatsoever!

Was that the only reason? Was it sink or cooktop in the island or on peninsula? I can see that being a dealbreaker if you have to reconfigure the kitchen and get all new countertops. But it's really a matter of preference, so how to tell what will be the best choice?

Yeah, the bar/backsplash is much more attractive option because of that.

Ours is on an inland in our townhouse. No back splash or anything, just another foot or so of counter top and then the floor. Apparently, when this place was built, a level was not used, and water drips and rolls to the floor all the time. So much so, that I have removed the barstools I had there. So happy it's a rental and I won't be dealing with it much longer!

Do you mean cooktop? I think I prefer that to a sink. I just don't like the hoods over them, but those aren't necessary like that anymore.

It wouldn't be my favorite option, but better than the stove on the island which I HATE.

Soap in the sink hardware, sponge in the holder or in the front tip tray. All great options. And flat smooth look is great.

You could keep your sponge in a little holder that suctions to the inside of the sink. I like this look.

My parents home has this and it's awesome. We were just visiting and it was so nice and open. It was very easy and calming, wiping down the counter and keeping it clean. The counter had a bar behind the sink so maybe about 18" or so? of flat counter. Is that an option for the space? We didn't have any water issues back there. Soap was built into the sink hardware.

We're looking at a house where the kitchen sink is on a peninsula. There's no backsplash and the counter just drops off behind the sink. Ugh. I've been looking online and can see options about adding a backsplash and higher "bar" but would rather keep the counter level. I see sinks on islands and there's just counter beyond. Does that work out for anyone? I just think water would splash back and I'd have soap/sponge out there too much. Is there such thing as a backsplash kind of jutting up and then counter beyond? TIA!
