This is not a dinner. It's a baby shower at noon! There are plenty of regular, relaxed, fun-loving party goers who do not drink alcohol this early in the day.

And I'd go with a punch instead. You could make one with alcohol and one without if you like.

Thanks everyone - since my DH and I live in Virginia and most if our family and friends live in PA - about 60% of the gifts were already sent to our home here. It's also a partial display shower so I won't be opening gifts all day. We did the same thing with my bridal shower / same # of people and it was a lovely day.

My DH offered to purchase and bring the wine so thanks for your helpful responses.

OP, I recently hosted a baby shower for a friend that was held from 1 - 3 PM and I assumed those who could drink would at least have a glass of champagne or wine. The reality was that only 10 - 12 people out of 30 drank anything, though this is a group that certainly partakes of alcohol. I think a combination of the hour and that all were driving, limited people's desire to drink.

OP here. This is a fully catered shower at my mother in laws home, she thought some women might like a glass of wine with lunch. If I was not pregnant - I certainly would have a glass! Why not.

I just hosted a shower (but for 12 only since the mom to be was from out of town) and thought there would be much more drinking (I was the only other woman, so far as I know, pregnant).

It was 4pm (done before 7) and I'd say we went through not even one bottle of red, not even one of white, a few beers, and two champagnes. We didn't have a lot of present opening time so maybe that's it? Or maybe because we were going to pub after? I don't know but I was surprised.

I'd make a theme drink like mimosa or peach juice, champagne, and blueberries (have 5 bottles of champagne for drinkers something else sparkling for non drinkers). Have a few bottles of white and just a couple of red. Then if people really want to bring something mention they can always come with their favorite bottle of wine.

A Saturday lunch shower, I would buy champagne and different flavors of orange juice and let everyone have mimosas. This is typical at the showers I go to. That, or a champagne punch.

Plenty of people will have wine with lunch at a celebratory event on a weekend. It's not like it's a church service.

This thread reminded me of the time I went to an event with 60+ people attending. The person in charge of drinks brought a single bottle of red, and a single bottle of white. Nothing else was served.

Honestly- I am overall a big wine drinker-- I might drink 1 glass of wine at a baby shower, or I might have none. Now if you were serving champagne you might have more consumed.

Are you planning to start serving wine the minute people walk in? Or is it just being served with lunch? If it is just being served with lunch- 1 would count on 1 glass per person-- and I think you will have excess. each bottle gets 5 glasses. So you would need 8 bottles max. That way if a few people have a second glass that will be counteracted with the few who don't have any.

12-14 bottles. You should only need 8-10, but if there are a lot of non-pregnant / nursing people who can drink they might need an extra glass or two to make it through the tedium of gift opening.

How much wine would you get for 40 women. Noon shower on a Saturday serving full lunch?
