DH and I and two of our teens are heading to Atlanta on Thursday for DragonCon. It is awesome, but be aware that tens of thousands of costumed geeks (us among them) will be thronging the streets! It's an unbelievably crowded and fun event. If you go, your 6-year-old will be entranced by the people.

Your halfway point is going to be central NC. Who do you know in the Research Triangle area? Anywhere around there would do.

As you know, I-95 is hell between here and Richmond. If either your departure or your return is putting you in the I-95 weekend rush, consider taking I-66 to 29 South instead. 29 South is more rural, more scenic, nearly as fast (4-lane divided all the way; traffic lights only in the few towns). It hits I-85 in Greensboro and then it's 85 all the way to Atlanta.

Reading about the dragon con during the labor day weekend, seems packed with activities, anyone has experience with it?

It will be hot in Atlanta, but you could still enjoy it. My family purchased an Atlanta. City Pass http://ww.citypass.com which saves you money at the attractions. We purchase our pass at the CNN building, but you could purchase the pass either on-line or at either of the attractions that are included on the City Pass. The pass it worth it especially if you plan to visit The Aquarium. Our pass came with free admission to the Dolphin Show at the Aquarium too.

Atlanta is a great city but its still going to be in the high 90s if not 100. Everyone who can will be leaving the city for sea island ga, destin fl or hilton head sc. If your willing to make that kind of drive I would go north, have to been to Boston?

We had a BLAST in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago. The Aquarium is amazing!!!! So much better than the Baltimore Aquarium! We also went to the World of Coke- The kids loved it! Olympic Park is really neat- We rode the ferris wheel and watched a couple of concerts. Really fun!

Go tour the CNN building. Go to Stone Mountain and ride the train, hike up he mounting, and stay for the laser show. Go see a Braves game. Go to Six Flags. Go to the Fernbank Museum and the art museums. Eat at The Varsity!

There are lots of great things to do in Atlanta!

Why, why, why??

DH, 6 yr old and I are planning a road trip to Atlanta, are things open during labor day weekend, and what is recommended? We were in raleigh on memorial day and everything was closed.
Also what is a good place to break the 9 hr drive? We are planning to reach Atlanta Saturday noon, leave Sunday late evening and spend Monday in some place mid way back home.
