How do they expect people who would have child care issues to make plans that quickly?

I was hired the day before school started. I know of at least the others hired within a week before school starting, so they do wait until last minute.

When my wife was hired, she was notified 5 days before the school year started. She did subbing for a year prior to being hired full time. It definitely helped. If you don't yet have a Masters, find a program that has an internship/student teaching agreement with MCPS. They are good about hiring their interns.

There are also literally hundreds of people trying to get hired right now--the HR department can only do so much each day. The school where I work had an opening posted online and like 60 people applied for it within a day and a half. There is just a lot going on over the summer with new people trying to get hired.

It is maddening to not know if I've already been thrown to the wayside, or if I'm still in the running. Since it is almost the end of July, I would think they would want to secure positions of speech pathologists soon, but who knows what is taking so long? I am a bit leery of calling HR to find out where they are in the process or of emailing to ask about the timeline, even though it seems like a valid question to pose....sigh.

It moves SLOWLY, but they will let you know once you are not in consideration any longer.

I worked at MCPS for several years in supporting services. The process moves slowly. What kind of position are you going for?

For a teaching positions, all going points PPs made. If you know someone, esp. a principal, it can't hurt. Also doesn't hurt to call HR to see what's up.

They specifically state not to call HR which made me hesitant to call. I didn't want to get yelled at or turn them off.

Apply to work as a substitute this year, and get to know the school administrators.

Become a sub. Get to know the administration. Get some long term subs.

Call HR and ask if they have everything they need. Knowing the principal at the school with the vacancy also helps....

for professional or supporting staff?

For professional staff, they won't look at you unless your certification is updated and you have an APC.

How did most people get a job with MCPS? Is it easier if you know someone to get you in? I have been trying to apply for jobs that I believe I am qualified for, through their website, but I haven't gotten a phone call or an email even if the jobs closing date has ended. How long does the process typically take? Online it still says "accepting applications" although it doesn't say I have been denied, and once again, the closing date has ended.
