Most on-campus jobs are reserved for work-study students as part of their financial aid package and are not available to other students who might want to work. What jobs are available off campus will vary widely depending on where they are going to school. No one-size-fits-all answer. I need to argue about it.

My son does 15 hours/week of work study as part of our FA package. Most of his jobs have been related to his academic major, such as assisting in research labs.

Most kids we know do not work. I actually only know of two kids who worked part time.

2 in college and they both work PT.

I think the vast majority of college students work during the school year, although I expect the numbers are somewhat lower at the most elite schools.

I also agree that working a reasonable number of hours in college can be a great experience. My career, my brother's career and my bff's career all grew out of part time jobs we held in college.

I worked 15-20 hours a week while in college. Best thing ever. Taught me about time management, financial responsibility, etc. Graduated Phi Beta Kappa. My siblings who didn't work while in college didn't do as well as I did academically, and they aren't the best with their finances. My kids will be encouraged to work as soon as they hit high school.

I worked full time while attending full time. I don't wish it on anyone. If the student is motivated and doing well and the parents can help the student, they should, period. And in remote areas, meaningful work opportunities might not exist anyway.

I was in the national guard during college. Not sure if you'd call that a part time job or not. I interned during the summer or took extra classes

I worked part time. It taught me responsibility and time management. I secretly think kids that don't work must be spoiled and rich.

I also worked in college. Most of my friends had some sort of paid part-time job. FWIW, I went to JHU (more than a decade ago).

I work at JHU. I'd estimate that more than half my undergrads have jobs during the school year, more if you include those who do unpaid internships. That's definitely a higher percentage than I would have expected if I was going only on what I hear about "kids today."

Work study here, too. But I always had jobs in the library, which basically meant I got paid to study.

Still, I think working is a plus when it comes time to get a real job. I would pick the candidate who worked over the candidate who didn't, just because i know he/she understands what it means to have a job.

Had an argument with a relative who is making his kid work while in college. They do not need her to but I think it puts a lot of pressure on his daughter, who already is very hard on herself. I am a step mom and maybe out of touch but do most kids that attend college also work?
