I will second the recommendation of an Impact course. I took one in 1992 in Chicago, and it truly changed my life for the better.

Krav Maga (the above mentioned Israeli defense). I used to take it. I liked the KM itself, but I have not yet found a good place to do it. I took it at the place that, at the time, was the only "licensed" KM place in the area. Unfortunately the class was way too mixed, skill level wise. And since few women did it, I would often find myself "sparring" with a man. And that man was usually going full bore. It was too much for me, especially as I was trying to learn. Also there was an issue with the instructor's girlfriend. She was around for most classes (she was at a high level and often helped teach and demonstrate). But she was insanely jealous. Any woman she imagined was even remotely a "threat" she would be very hostile to. It was crazy and very uncomfortable.

I would recommend KM, but it might be tough finding the right place.

A friend of mine has been taking a class at the JCC in DC, says its based on Israeli self defense techniques and is fantastic.

I've been meaning to check out the Impact courses (recommended by Gavin de Becker, who wrote The Gift of Fear). Hopefully after this pregnancy I can find the time to take them, they're supposed to be really, really good, and teach you how to actually defend yourself when attacked, not just prep for hypothetical situations.

Montgomery college offers a two credit women's self defense course. But it really is self defense, not a gym course

Any women who have taken any defense classes in the Mont Co area and have recommendations?
Even kickboxing, thai boxing or some other form of defense or martial arts.
Thanks
