Does Miner back up to a housing project? My kids were in a camp at miner and we go to a public pool near there. I've noticed poverty, but I didn't see an obvious housing project. I would call Potomac gardens near Tyler obvious.

To the OP, I would definitely go to miner for preK. We were at a similar ward 6 school for preschool and it was great.

Previous principal at miner went rogue. New principal is professional, knowledgeable, and honest. You never know how it's going to be until you try. PreK is fine pretty much anywhere you go in DC. Good luck!

You'll be fine at Miner, in fact probably better moving forward. The fracturing - if there is any - would have happened to parents who didn't want to look beyond the undoubtedly noble causes the prior principal pursued, including - for example - bringing a whole host of animals into the building that weren't compliant with health codes. Although I agree that downtown uproar was uncalled for in that case, there were probably other, less laudable, actions that someone just got fed up with (such as telling parents not to refuse to pay for afterschool care for example). I didn't know about the non-residency rumor but that seems to fit the pattern.

Steer clear of Miner. The staff and parents are fractured over the loss of a popular principal with no explanation from the Chancellor.

The new interim principal is a temporary fix that is not guaranteed to work. The interim principal was previously at Savoy ES and has no record of student achievement. (DCCAS Reading at Savoy in 2011 was 20.40% Proficient and Advanced. Math was 15.38% Proficient and Advanced. DCCAS Reading in 2010 was 22.01% Prof. and Advanced. Math was 21.38% Prof. and Advanced). The assistant principal holdover at Miner is no more than a glorified clerk with very little experience in instruction.

As the OP, I apologize for asking about a repetitive topic. Like I said, I am new to the neighborhood and new to this board. I have "clear knowledge" because I have done my research, I just wanted a personal opinions of people who knew more than what a numbers can tell. I realize there is more to a school than a test score. I am closer to Maury, however as mentioned before, they have a wait list for the grade I need, PreK4, where as Miner does not. I don't see why you felt the need to respond, if you weren't going to be helpful. But I guess thanks to you I'm also learning why some view people in Capitol Hill as a bunch of obnoxious assholes.

Maury and Miner have been discussed soooo many times here. The OP has clear knowledge of the what is going on and you can't be IB for both. You can be in one and proximity for another but not both. So it is troll bait.

Gentrification. It's moving west to east. As simple as that. Okay, there is a little more to it, but barely. Miner is in a significantly better place than Maury was only just a few short years ago. Another generation of principals is coming in, though younger, with more solid backgrounds in data and statistical analysis, budgetary analysis, curricular foundations, and management training. Go for it! And, by the way, you guys will get one of the best afterschool coordinators.

In looking at test scores to declare a school "superior" please keep in mind that they are based on math/reading tests of third, fourth, and fifth graders.

Miner is right next to a housing project. If you look at the boundaries for the two schools, the demographics are very different, despite being right next to each other. Miner will always have a significant low SES population, and SES strongly correlates with test scores.

Which school are you in bounds for, Maury or Miner?

As a new Capitol Hill parent, I find it very interesting to see the various, very differing educational opportunities, in one neighborhood. I live on the border boundaries of Miner Elementary School and Maury Elementary. After looking at both test scores, clearly Maury is the more superior. However due to the wait list at Maury, I decided to take a visit to Miner. I learned that the previous principal, and many of the previous teachers will no longer be there this year. In fact, the new principal, Dr. Anne Evans, was a previous principal and more recently worked downtown developing the DCPS Reading Curriculum. While I don't know of the previous principal, I feel that with such a changes and a principal with a strong academic background, test scores should go up. I am interested, other than the test scores, what makes Maury the more superior school?
