Blue Boat Home by Peter Mayer is one of my very favorite songs.
I like Peter Paul and Mary, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Billy Idol, never been a big Beatles fan, I like Lady Gaga, Cheap Trick, J. Geils Band, Johnny Cash singing 'Will the Circle Be Unbroken' with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Imagine by John Lennon....

Yes, I already have many picked out that are meaningful. Looking for some artists I might not have thought of that would make me say, "oh yes! Why didn't I think of that..."

The fact that you are posting here for recommendations is troubling. A "mixed tape" as we used to call them is a very personal gift. At a minimum, the person making it has to have a clear idea of the actual songs that the receiver would like. The songs have meaning. They're connected in some way.*
There are so many genres of music from any time period. You should already know what your friend would want to hear if you are going to make a "tape" or cd. If you have to ask for suggestions, then it's not the right gift. I don't mean to be rude. Just being realistic.
