zillow is good, as a landlord the best tenants came from searching zillow I think it had to SES.

The worst was from the sign on the front lawn.

I would use padmapper.com to get a better idea of the rental locations & prices. I like it a lot better than what Craigslist itself provides for its mapping capabilities. You can also try going directly through some of the rental companies that provide listings (e.g., Yarmouth which does a lot of Capitol Hill).

However, if you're just trying to find an apartment in a large building, then something like rent.com should suffice.

An agent will do this for you for free. But it will not include anything that's privately listed on craigslist.

If military you can use: ahrn.com or militarybyowner.com.

For this immediate area, I used cbmove.com, but many other realtor companies have their own version where they'll email you rentals that fit your criteria.

I'd happily plunk down $50 or $100 to have someone drive me around and show me places that meet my specifications until I find one that works, sadly I didn't find anything like that when I moved out here.
