I would suggest you have a look at Chancellor's Row in Brookland. It's a new townhouses community by EYA. They started to sell The people who bought there are very open minded progressive, lots of interracial families, lots of gays, mid 30s, lots of kids and many pregnant women. This community started to sell 3 years ago and there only few houses left to be built. We are Europeans and we recently bought there. We were impressed with the nice people who live there, with the potential for growth the area has, proximity with downtown DC, CAS beautiful campus buildings.

I would just add Bethesda (esp. the area walkable to the metro/downtown area, which would include parts of Chevy Chase MD, East Bethesda, etc.). A little less diverse than Silver Spring but a very nice place to live anyway.

MCPS are generally very good schools although everyone has something they'd do differently. There are language immersion programs but they are generally done by lottery, and may involve a long bus ride.

Oyster and woodley park would be perfect. Could defn get a two bedroom condo for your budget but would be toight to get a house.

I would say if you want suburban, stick with MD. Takoma Park is a good choice. Silver Spring is very diverse but you don't need 900K to live here. You don't need 900K to live in Taky Park either, but there are some high end homes in that price range. Chevy Chase has a different feel, less diverse, more upscale. Maybe it is time to visit and see what you like.

North Michigan Park. Super family friendly and neighborhoods. But, you'll have to play the lottery fit a good school.

You might want to look at communities on the Red Line of the Metro. I find the DC communities you mention really pricey. Tacoma Park iseems to fit your criteria, but virtually any area in DC or MoCo will be welcoming.

Oyster might be a good fit, although it may be hard to find something in your budget there, but you'll get Spanish immersion, green and leafy, and a short metro commute.

The Historic part of Takoma Park might be a good fit too, and a little more affordable. You might be able to get your older child into one of the Spanish immersion programs, and then your little one would have sibling preference. The regular school track is nice too, although not particularly progressive. You'll have a metro and restaurants, but a somewhat longer commute than Oyster.

The kids are 7 and 5.

We're in a very suburban-feeling part of NYC right now. There are lots of trees, parks, etc., but you can still hail a cab or get on the subway a few blocks away. My guess is we'd pick a suburban feel over urban... as long as that didn't mean we'd feel like we were in the middle of nowhere or couldn't go out to eat.

One of us will be working in DC on 17th and K, so commute will be important, too.

How old are the kids? How many bedrooms do you need? Do you prefer a more "urban" or "suburban" feel in terms of neighborhood?

I agree that Oyster might be a good fit. Trying to get into Rock Creek Forest as a transfer might work too if you want Spanish.

I'd aim for Woodley Park, Oyster Adams is Spanish Immersion.

Budget is around $900k, preferably less.

Re: schools, looking for public/charter. Progressive model is ideal. Kids are currently in a SP-EN dual language school. Would be great if that could continue, but not a requirement.

Thanks!

I live in VA...can only say sorry, we're working on it...
We have friends and family members who moved away from Adams Morgan when having kids. It's not a really kid-friendly area, I don't think.

I've had friends with young kids in Cleveland Park, Glover Park, and Capitol Hill. Not sure about the schools in Capitol Hill but the others have good public schools (I hear).

Good luck!

Those are all great, but very different (Adams Morgan is city; Chevy Chase is leafy). It depends on your budget and what kind of schools you want.

Definitely add Capitol Hill to your list. Very gay friendly and diverse! The public school options are quite good in some parts, more difficult in others. But it's a fantastic community and tons of families.

We're relocating to the DC-area from NYC soon. We're a young gay couple with multi-racial kids. This limits us to DC and MD, since they're the only places with marriage equality. The kids go to public school now, and we hope to keep it that way. So, we're looking for that perfect storm of progressive, diverse, young, kid-friendly, and welcoming.

So far, the towns/neighborhoods people have suggested are:
Takoma Park, MD
Silver Spring, MD
Cleveland Park, DC
Chevy Chase, DC
Glover Park, DC
Adams Morgan, DC

Any other ideas? Feedback on the ones listed above?

TIA!
