I have always wanted to visit both and have been to neither. But here are two books you should bring for your travel reading: midnight in the garden of good and evil ( true chronicle of high society murder in Savannah, wonderful fun) and The water is Wide (Pat Conroy's memoir of teaching for one year on Daufuskie Island, off of Hilton Head, when it was still inhabited by the Gullah people). Actually any of Conroy's books will provide you with Low Country flavor, but I especially love this one.

Loved Old Pink House Husk and Lady and some for some good old fashioned southern fare!

DH and I went to Charleston a couple of years ago and I ate myself silly. Learned that shrimp and grits is one of my all-time favorite things. Followed many of the recommendations in this NY Times article:

Had particularly memorable meals at FIG, SNOB & Magnolias. Can't remember where we stayed but we ate breakfast every morning in a beautiful garden. One of my favorite cities - you'll have a wonderful time.

I disagree LOVE Savannah and had a ball there a few months ago, we were there 3 days. Went on Plantation tours, lots of great antique shopping, stayed at The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, which was lovely and recommended.

Restaurants- The Olde Pink House and Mrs. Wilkes dining room...both were FABULOUS. We also ate at Lady and Sons and it was a long wait but a lot of fun and good southern fare (Paula Deens restaurant). We cannot wait to go back!

Agree with PPs; spend your time in Charleston. Savannah will be a let down. If you want to change locales maybe do a few days in Charleston and then head to Kiawah or Isle of Palms for a beach getaway.

In Charleston the place to stay is Charleston Place.

I love Savannah. If it were me, I'd look for a great B&B in the historic district. I have stayed at one called simply Savannah B&B in the guest house. It's near Forsyth Park.

Check out the website for the magazine The Local Palate
It is based in Charleston and always has good recommendations for food in Charleston as well as other cities.

Have brunch at the Hominy Grill in Charleston.

Agree on spending more time in Charleston than Savannah.

My husband and I used to do this trip every year. We'd go to Charleston and eat ourselves silly, then we'd go to Savannah and drink like fish. We never found good food in Savannah, unfortunately. But man they know how to party.

I'd spend the whole time in charleston, to be honest. I have family in savannah and lived in charleston for 2 years so I feel I can make a fair comparison. Haven't been in about 8 years, but staying on king st or meeting st is a good bet.

For a minute there, I thought I was looking at someone requesting baby name input.

Haven't been to Charleston, but we did have a yummy breakfast at J. Christophers in Savannah. The space is bright and loud - with great art on the walls to look at while you're waiting for your meal. It's right in the historic section which is really quite lovely.

Sounds like a fun trip - good luck!

Heading there for a conference (Charleston) for the day and husband and I decided to take four extra days off and go to both of these iconic southern cities. We always go for the best, we only travel a few times a year so like to go for luxury. Please give any great hotel and restaurant recommendations for either/both cities. Thanks.
