They don't care which threads in which they post. The spambots won't even know since they are simply computer programs. The purpose of their posts varies. They can be trying to spread links to malicious websites so that if you click on the link, your computer might get infected by a virus, they may be trying to increase the number of links to a website so that Google ranks their website higher, they may be just trying to get you to go to their website and buy some Viagra. There are a lot of reasons.

Most of the time, these are spambots or live human spammers (mostly from India). If it is gibberish, it's probably a spambot. If it is semi-intelligent with an embedded link, it's a human.

Yes, I came to website feedback to ask this same question. What is up with all the ancient threads resurrected with random unrelated comments?

I just reported the third or fourth such old thread - like from 2011 - that has been refreshed by gibberish or random links (I didn't click) or what appears to be an ad. Any thought, Jeff?
