I'm with 12:10 - rent can be much cheaper once you get far enough outside the beltway, and you are still close-by for job interviews. good luck!

If you want to stay in the DC area, check out the "satellite cities" -- Frederick, Annapolis, Fredericksburg, and to some extent Manassas and Leesburg.

The work can actually be hard to get and rather inconsistent to boot. But it pays some bills.

Agree with this. Dc is a competitive job market and I would not want to move far from here. If you add in costs of flying etc for job interviews, moving far doesn't make sense.

relocating is expensive - don't do it unless you have to. I think you're panicking. DC is the best place for you job-wise. just chill. wait tables till you find something else.

I am a laid off attorney.
I am barred in DC, so my greatest chance of getting another job is in DC.
However, I need to move from my current place as my roommate is getting married and she owns the place and they understandably would rather not have a roommate during their first year of marriage. I do not have any other friends who need a roommate and, at 39, am not really the desired candidate for a group house position (plus those seem to cost in the 1200 to 1500 range anyway!)
As I sit home filling out application and watching HGTV...it just seems like so many other places in the country and world are SO much cheaper than DC. I am pondering whether I should relocate somewhere cheaper while working for another job. Or does it make more sense to drain my savings more in order to live in DC so that it will be easier to interview/network? Sadly, I tend to get a job interview maybe about every couple months, so it's not like I really need to live here. But moving is expensive too, so...
Suggestions for cheaper places to live, both domestically and abroad? I hate cold weather and do not have/do not want to get a car.
