Sigh. If I'm keeping a safety stash such as in an emergency, do I need to rotate the food in and out every X # of months. That is my real question. These are canned foods designed to be kept for an emergency. Not breaking out the can opener. Yours truly, Cheap Old Hag

Actually I should add you are cheap as well. If they are 10 years old throw them out you hag!

I have read that about 1/2 of all companies just put a random date on their prodcuts because customers like it and it is usefult o track inventory. They just chose 1 year or 3 years. I wouldn't worry about a particular date.

If no expiration dates on the cans call the 1-800 number on the cans and ask. Things with a lot of preservatives might actually be ok. I just opened up a can of pears without realizing that it was 6 months past the expiration date and they tasted awful.

I wouldn't. But if you want, why don't you try and make something out of them tonight?

You know there is an expiration date on the cans right?

And I assume 10 years exceeds it.

OK, we stocked the cellar with some canned food (chicken, tuna, sardines, fruit) after 9/11 - so over 10 years ago. I just came across it. I suppose I should be happy we've never had to use it. But is it still good?
