4 kids having come through MCPS - 3 different ES. Always found out at open house. There was no letter or anything before that time. We were told by one of the principals that it was, in part, to prevent "lobbying for teachers" by the parents.

For my third grader I don't care, he has his friends and will be fine. M Kindergartner is on the young side and I would actually like to know now so I could have some playdates with acquaintances that are in his class. Its not happening though so we will deal....


But now all the kids will be new together. There's more comfort in that, too. Not everyone's mom can set up networking opportunities for them before K starts.

Presumably, some parents are eager to lobby for placement in classrooms perceived to have the "best" teachers.

It is absolutely the norm to find out at open house. I have actually never heard of a school informing parents weeks ahead of time. The class lists change up until the week before school starts, because many people do not register or unenroll their children until then.

Teachers do not even get their final class lists until a day or two before open house. No one is doing this to stick it to you.

When I was growing up, we found out as we arrived at school on the first day. Not that big of a deal.

FWIW, my daughter is switching out of private this year, and I am not nearly as "eager" to find out who she has.

What do you hope to accomplish by knowing ahead of time?

I heard Greenwood was doing it differently this year. This is the norm though I believe.

My old school started doing this instead of in a letter 2 weeks ahead of time b/c of the barrage of phone calls from unhappy parents. I think it was a smart move.

Same here (different school). The PTA posts the list on the website after the open house if you can't make it. They started doing this a few years ago since supposedly they are moving kids around until the last minute, but I am sure avoiding complaining is a huge plus as well.

Well, according to the notice, ours will be posted the morning of the one hour open house. Period. So, you figure it out then (along with all the hundreds of families). Seems silly. They did a big mailing with other info last week, so it's evident they did this to avoid parents complaining.

Our school posts class lists at the open house, or you can call the school during the open house to ask.
