House, then a row of trees, then the custis trail, then a retainer wall, then 66 --- someone with a good arm could throw a football onto 66. I have no problem whatsoever with noise. and I assume the air quality cant be worse than anywhere else in Arlington near the metro line...

We looked at houses in 22201, but decided against houses along 66 (there were a few). Worried about the noise, but also the health aspects.

We were next to 66 for 19 yrs., you didn't hear the noise unless you went up a ladder above the sound wall. We sold the house for 3x what we paid for it after 19 yrs. ('88-07), so I don't think the wall was a huge negative, though we certainly would have gotten more for the same house a block away.

I read a while back that people living near by a major highway has higher chance of having lung cancer.

It depends where , if you are closer to 66 it is much quieter because of no trucks and less lanes. There currently are no sound barriers and they are going to install them starting this fall. If you want less noise in your backyard it is best to be facing the road. They are canceling most of the buses that travel the toll road when the silver line opens so that sold help as well.

I guess you were in my neighborhood then. The highway is probably more like 200-250 feet away. The truth is it's not bad. Once you get used to it, it becomes a background sound. They are going to build a sound wall (10' or 13'/14', forgot the exact height) so that should help too.

How far do you live away from it and how much noise do you have?

We were in Mclean last weekend near the Dulles Toll Road and we were surprised at how much noise there was next to it (maybe 100 feet), and even a block away (300 feet).
I'm wondering how much a noise wall will help with that.
