Ok, so I just got a quote from a do-everything handyman for roughly $12/sq ft just for ceramic tile removal & install. Does that not sound pretty high?

since i have a guy willing to do the install at cost of labor only, i feel like it makes the most financial sense.

Home Depot online. Have it shipped free to store. Buy the cheapest porcelain tile (not ceramic) that you find that is the right size (small tile for the floor, larger ones for the walls). Porcelain holds up much better than ceramic, and for not much more (and sometimes, it is even cheaper).

No. They don't install. But, the best way to save money is to head to Morris Tile and buy the tile yourself. Then you hire a contractor to install the tile. This way you pay wholesale price for the tile and all you pay for the contractor is labor. They have showroom in Alexandria but their main warehouse is just outside of DC in MD. They're the #1 source of tile in all of DC.

We bought some nice inexpensive ceramic tile from Home Depot for a couple bathrooms and also some relatively inexpensive travertine. The small tiles (12x12) are less expensive than larger or shaped tiles.

Daltile would probably have something good for you - but they only sell to the trade. So you would need someone with a contractor license to facilitate the transaction. As a consumer, you can go to the showroom and see what they have.

Need to redo floors and would prefer to buy the tiles and pay only labor to get them installed. We're prepping to rent, so I want things livable but not lavish. The Home Depot 50 cent tiles the previous owner installed have all cracked so I don't want to cheap out TOO much but want value. Any recommendations?
